“Rupert Broadley is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Derbyshire, creating works often influenced by the nearby Peak District. He learned watercolours via his Grandfathers tuition, working initially on portraits and later broadening his practice to include abstracted works on canvas.
Rupert’s work focuses predominantly on capturing the energy and movement within a subject, layering these fleeting glimpses on top of one another to convey a specific visual pathway to the viewer. Plein air sketches and digital reference images inform an intuitive studio practice.
In slight contrast to these visceral works, Rupert’s portraits stay true to his Grandfather’s teachings and are loose yet considered. Watercolours are utilised to capture character inflections and the unpredictability of a human subject.”
